Representatives from Totton College, and the Totton & Eling Carnival Committee, are coming together for a community cause. Derek Headrige, Campus Principal, and Mary Howard, Faculty Manager at Totton College, proudly presented a cheque for £2500, to Julie Motherwell, community champion and Councillor Neville Penman from the Carnival Committee this week.
The technical college recently announced that it is the official sponsor of the Carnival, taking place on Saturday 10 June, saving it from cancellation this year due to a lack of funds. The historic event has been running for 103 years across the town centre, dating back to 1914.
Mary Howard commented:
“Many of our students and staff are from the area, myself included, and being a Totton girl, I know what the carnival means to people locally. We are pleased to be sponsoring, but also to be providing a space for community groups to come and prepare themselves and their floats in the College car park at Water Lane. We will be opening up our beautiful, fully equipped Opus Salon, giving carnival participants a space to style their hair and make-up, and access toilet facilities and refreshments prior to the procession.”
Derek Headrige, Campus Principal at Totton College, commented:
“The carnival is close to the hearts of many residents here in Totton, which is why it is so important to us, that it goes ahead. It is a long-standing tradition and is always well attended.
It is a really upbeat and positive event that brings the whole community together and we are delighted to be providing our support this year, to help make it happen.”
This year’s theme is, Totton Goes Animal Crackers and with around 16 floats expected, the streets of Totton and Eling will be in full swing. The procession is due to start from 4pm at Calmore roundabout, and finish up at the Recreation Grounds in Totton at 5:30pm.
