Totton College Level 2 and Level 3 Art and design students visited Hauser and Wirth Somerset, earlier this month.  A converted medieval farm just outside Bruton.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset is a pioneering world-class gallery and multi-purpose arts centre which acts as a destination for experiencing art, architecture, and the remarkable Somerset landscape through new and innovative exhibitions of contemporary art. An impressive landscaped garden, designed by internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, sits behind the gallery buildings and includes a changing programme of outdoor sculptures, and houses the Radić Pavilion, designed by Smiljan Radić.

Art and design students had the opportunity to view the latest contemporary artists in a rural environment, with a tour of the gallery and grounds by the education officer Bryony Brickell. Students enjoyed a fantastic day exploring the work of multicultural artists such as Takesada Matsutani and sculptors such as Paul McCarthy represented in the grounds, sketching and photographing the work. The visit has been an invaluable experience for the students giving them a greater understanding of selling and promoting artwork, contributing to their work experience assignment in the New Year.
